When prominent Freemason, Frederick Steele, is found ritualistically massacred, and fellow Mason, Joseph Doherty, is found semi-conscious next to the body, knife in hand, it takes little time for the words Masonic Conspiracy to spill from eager lips. But as his drug induced consciousness fades, Doherty desperately manages to utter a final plea prior to submitting to the darkness; begging an onlooker to solicit the aid of a peculiar order of men, the Zodiac Club.
Known to very few, the Zodiac Club are made up of seven members; their interest being the sole pursuit of history’s most hidden truths. An order of researchers and scholars whose grand archive is said to hold the answers of many of the nation’s historic riddles. Driven by an egocentric desire to know all, along with an inherent moral duty to the Freemasons, the Zodiac Club acquiesce to the plea for aid.
Alexander Owen, a troubled member of the peculiar order, soon finds himself catapulted into a new and mystifying world of conspiracy and murder. The further he delves, the deeper the Masonic implications are sewn. From the symbolic positioning of Steele’s body to the ritual importance of his wounds, Owen can deduce little more than what the media is propagating into the households of the masses; the Freemasons are responsible. Owen has little time to settle into the case when a past acquaintance opens some deep emotional wounds and he soon realises that a dark psychological journey lay ahead. Ancient Masonic theories and traditions are explored in an attempt to unearth the origins of the motives behind the massacres. But in a dramatic encounter Owen realises that despite the involvement of an anti-Masonic order, the Masons are still not above suspicion as a visit to the Grand Lodge of England results in a near fatal moment of clarity as Owen becomes only too aware that the hunter had just become the hunted.
Unable to discern who he can trust, Owen’s investigation takes him into a realm of the unknown, as further massacred Freemasons soon lead him to a web of deceit and immorality. As the shrouded veil starts to rise, a trail of abandoned pseudo temples stained with the remnants of sadistic rites lead Owen into the dark and sinister world of his enemy; a world too closely replicated in his own egocentric existence. A moment of clarity spurns Owen from the bottom of a bottle of the Green Fairy and onto the heels of his enemies. But what are their motives? And what is the intended climax of the brutal ritualistic massacres of Freemasons that is apparently building to a crescendo? Can Freemasonry really be linked directly to the practices and ceremonies of the Ancient Egyptians? Can Freemasonry truly be the last remnants of the actual teachings of Jesus Christ? Ancient Masonic history and legends are unravelled in a race against time as Owen desperately attempts to unearth the truth before the final note is struck.

The Illustrious Venom edition by PS Moore Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
An absolutely thrilling page turner. A thorough enjoyment to read. PS Moore has created some fantastic characters and an intriguing plot. A great debut novel from a talented writer. I hope there will be more from The Zodiac Club.
Like many self-published works, The Illustrious Venom suffers from several dozen misplaced, misused, and misspelled words making it difficult at times for a reader to progress. That notwithstanding, it's a mystery which only holds its intrigue for the first 40% of the book. After that, despite the author's attempts, it's pretty easy to see what's going to happen next. Seeming like a weak British imitation of Dan Brown's "The Lost Symbol", it uses Freemasonry as a plot tool but unfortunately is unable to create the drama and suspense of Mr. Brown's work. That SO many deaths are simply dismissed pushes belief beyond all bounds. It's a lengthy book for a 'beach read' but if you want a Masonic mystery with some unbelievable characters and action, you might enjoy this. At the end, I felt a bit cheated - not so much on price but because of the time I'd taken to read this.
I would definitely recommend this book to others. It kept my interest the whole way through. A very exciting read. Wonderfully detailed and a great ending!
